What inspires an artist? It is the scenery around us, an idea in our heads, a piece of glass?

Whether you paint in oil, watercolor, colored pencil, charcoal, pieces of glass - the vision comes together and the challenge is always how do I transfer this to a flat surface? With glass not only is it what colors do I use but what type of glass do I use - pieces the size of grains of sand, tiny chunks, long strips, big pieces. Is it transparent or not?
